Piazza del Duomo (Pannello A)

Cathedral of San Zeno and Belltower:

The Cathedral was built in the 12th-13th centuries on the site of an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1108. The three-tiered arcaded stone façade has a fine portico (14th cent.) with a barrel-vaulted coffered ceiling and a lunette depicting the Madonna and Child (1505) by Andrea della Robbia. On the pediment are two 18th-century statues of St. Zeno and St. James the Apostle. The interior has a central nave and two side aisles separated by columns with decorated capitals. The many artworks include: the Tomb of Cino da Pistoia by Sienese artists Agostino di Giovanni and Giovanni d'Agostino (1337), a decorated Crucifix on wood by Coppo di Marcovaldo and his son Salerno (1275), an 12 Enthroned Madonna by Lorenzo di Credi (1485) and the Tomb of Cardinal Forteguerri by Verrocchio and other artists. The Altar of St. James, in the Chapel of St. James, is a masterpiece of Tuscan goldsmith art (1287-1456), in which the young Brunelleschi worked in 1401. The Tribune (1599-1602) and side altars are decorated with works from the 16th and 17th centuries. The chapter houses contain various other valuable artworks and tapestries, including the large 16thcentury Flemish Millefiori Tapestry. The 67-metre campanile was begun in the 12th century with two stories of paired windows. Three tiers with rounded polychrome marble arches were added in the early 1300s. The spire and clock face were added in the second half of the 16th century.

Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi:

The old bishop's residence was begun in the late 11th century, originally as a fortress, but later transformed into a palace. When Bishop Atto introduced the cult of St. James (mid-12th century), a sacristy was created to house precious items donated by followers. Above it was created the Chapel of St. Niccoló, which has fresco decorations (13th-14th cent.). Major restoration work carried out between 1973 and 1980 restored the original Gothic style of the residence, which now houses a museum of archaeology with Etruscan finds and remains of the Roman city, and the Museo Capitolare di S. Zeno which 13 contains the Treasury of St. James, a Reliquary (1407) from the Ghiberti workshop and other works of sacred art from the Cathedral.

Baptistery of San Giovanni in Corte:

Built on the site of the church of Santa Maria in Corte, the baptistery was completed in the 1300s by Cellino di Nese with the addition of polychrome marble cladding. The main entrance, to the right of which is a pulpit with the Head of John the Baptist, has an architrave depicting Scenes from the Life of John the Baptist and Salome with, in the lunette above, a Madonna and Child between St. John the Baptist and St. Peter, attributed to Giovanni d'Agostino and his artists. Inside, the baptismal font with elegant polychrome marble basin (originally in the earlier church) is by Lanfranco da Como (1226).
